Orange OR-120
1975
This 1975 Orange OR120 head, also known as the OR120 Graphic, is a fantastic sounding amp. Yes, it can get very loud but even at relatively moderate volumes, it sounds full, clear, and detailed with plenty of sparkle and a midrange punch that only a 100 watt tube amp can provide. When cranked it produces a rich, thick, and saturated tone that features Orange's signature midrange growl. Orange amps are definitely in the British camp in terms of sound and there is a reason why so many rockers used them in the 70s and 80s.
This amp recently underwent some maintenance which included the replacement of two electrolytic bias caps, a power resistor, and the removal of a previous master volume modification and restoration to its original circuit configuration. All of the remaining components appear to be original including the transformers and iconic orange Tolex.
Controls include F.A.C. (Frequency Attenuator Control) which is a six-point notched dial that subtracts increasing amounts of low end from the tone, two treble and bass dials marked just “KHz” and Hz”, respectively, HF Drive (power amp presence control), and Gain. An external reverb unit can be connected to the Echo jacks.
The tube configuration includes EL-34 power tubes (4) and 12AX7 preamp tubes (2). The rectifier is solid state.
